At a campaign-style rally in Toronto on March 4, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau began his speech on a dejected tone. Hours before taking the podium, Jane Philpott resigned as chair of the treasury committee that oversees government spending. Her departure expressed dismay at Mr Trudeau's handling of the worst scandal in his government since taking office in October 2015. So far, two of his cabinet members and his closest aides have resigned. The cheers from Toronto fans couldn't hide the fact that his government was in crisis. Trudeau's hopes of re-election this October have been dashed.
